FLYING BEYOND

THE CANADIAN COMMERCIAL PILOT TEXTBOOK

FlyingBeyond_coversThis long-awaited commercial ground school textbook, Flying Beyond: The Canadian Commercial Pilot Textbook, is the perfect educational segue from From the Ground Up into the higher standards required of students seeking their commercial pilot licence.

Authored by experienced and respected Canadian ground school instructor, Chris Hobbs, Flying Beyond takes readers further than what they merely need to know to pass their commercial written examination. While conscientiously fulfilling this latter requirement, Flying Beyond’s content is also written to take students forward on a career path as highly-skilled, knowledgeable, and thoroughly-educated professional aviators.

The topics in Flying Beyond are presented in the order given in Transport Canada’s syllabus. Subjects include: Human Factors (Psychological and Physiological), Theory of Flight, Airframes and Engines, Aircraft Systems, Flight Instruments, Meteorology, Weather Reports and Forecasting, Pilot Navigation and Radio Navigation, Flight Operations, Air Law, and more.

Each chapter is enhanced with compelling anecdotes that serve as excellent “real-world” learning tools that put subject matter into greater perspective for readers. Furthermore, examples abound throughout the book to further consolidate the understanding of subject matter. Finally, frequently placed “exam hints” direct students to pay special attention so as to be better prepared to take the written commercial test.

Whether seeking to acquire the basic knowledge necessary to earn a commercial licence, or setting out on a career path in aviation, Flying Beyond serves both needs comprehensively. For students seeking more, Flying Beyond provides it: beyond what you learned for your private licence, and deeply into the broader knowledge-base required to get your commercial licence.

From the Ground Up is the definitive source to get students aloft. Now, Flying Beyond is the conclusive base to advance those students, and take them further afield.

About the Author

Chris_HobbsCHRIS HOBBS was born and raised in the small village of Godmanchester, not far from the university town of Cambridge, in eastern England. He attended Queen Mary, University of London, one of the U.K.’s leading research-focused higher education institutions. There, he earned an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Philosophy.

A mathematician by training and a telecommunications engineer by profession, Chris has worked extensively in the field of software development, and service-oriented architectures, in his on-going career as a software systems developer.

His life as a pilot took flight via an interest in sailplanes. Chris learned to fly gliders in Wales before moving to Canada where he continued his flying activities by learning to fly powered aircraft. Chris was one of the first individuals in Canada to hold a Recreational Pilot Permit. Shortly thereafter, he upgraded to a Private Pilot Licence. Chris now holds a Commercial Pilot Licence, and carries both instrument and instructor ratings.

Chris has decades worth of experience in the teaching of PPL, CPL, and IFR groundschools. His teaching methods are highly-regarded, as are the written materials he has developed to enhance his in-class instruction. Having also authored titles in the field of mathematics and software design, Flying Beyond: The Canadian Commercial Pilot Textbook is a product of Chris’s thorough background both as a dedicated instructor, and as a very active and proficient pilot.

Chris is based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and flies from his home base, the Rockcliffe Flying Club, at historic Rockcliffe Airport along the shores of the Ottawa River.
